House, Senate Vote to Restore Some Michigan Budget Cuts

Some of the state budget cuts made by Governor Gretchen Whitmer more than two months ago would be restored under legislation approved yesterday by the state House and Senate.

The supplemental budget bill would undo 27 of the 147 line-items Whitmer vetoed, and would also reverse about half of the nearly $1 billion in transfers made by the State Administrative Board.

Among the programs that would be reinstated are funding for isolated school districts, sheriff’s department road patrols, and small hospitals, which pleased State Representative Greg Markkanen…

Each body will need to ratify the other’s vote before a unified bill can be sent to the governor for her signature.

Two additional bills also moved forward. One would require the legislature to submit its proposed budget to the governor by July 1st each year – three months ahead of the start of the new fiscal year. The second would limit the authority of the Administrative Board to make transfers of budgeted money within departments. There are still some specifics to be worked out on that one.
