PHF, Finlandia Celebrate Giving Tuesday

A number of local non-profits will be celebrating Giving Tuesday today.

Giving Tuesday is designed to offset the commercialism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, and redirect our focus toward the more Christmas-oriented concepts of giving and helping others.

Finlandia University will again be raising funds to help pay for student scholarships… [MYERS A].

That’s Finlandia’s Director of Marketing and Communications Olivia Myers on last week’s Finlandia Fridays program. Part of the key to last year’s success was a $20,000 matching grant offered by Finlandia Board President Julie Badel… [MYERS B].

Myers says Finlandia will be active all day on its social media platforms… [MYERS C].

The university will also be taking part in Facebook’s Giving Tuesday campaign. Facebook is offering $14 million in matching money for donations made to participating organizations through their Facebook pages. You can contribute to Finlandia through its Facebook page, or at their website.

The Portage Health Foundation is offering $100,000 in matching money for contributions received today by 15 local non-profits.

The beneficiaries include the Swedetown Trails Club, Superior Search and Rescue, Simple Kindness for Youth (SKY), Phoenix House, the Ontonagon County Cancer Society, Omega House, Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly, the Keweenaw Family Resource Center, Dial Help, Dan Schmitt Gift of Music, Copper Country Senior Meals, Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Barbara Kettle Gundlach Shelter, the Baraga County Shelter Home, and 31 Backpacks.

Checks must be made out to the Portage Health Foundation, with the designated charity written on the memo line. They must be dated and postmarked today to qualify for the match.
