Whitmer: “Postpone ‘Punitive’ Medicaid Work Requirement”

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has called on the state legislature to hold off on implementing the Medicaid Work Requirement that is set to begin January first.

The work requirement was part of the Medicaid expansion approved during the Rick Snyder administration.

It calls for most Medicaid recipients between the ages of 19 and 61 to show that they’ve worked at least 80 hours per month, or lose their health care coverage.

Exceptions are made for those physically unable to work, pregnant women, and those providing primary care for children under age six, or disabled dependents of any age.

A coalition of groups is suing to have the requirement removed.

Yesterday, Whitmer called the requirements “punitive.”
