Blizzard Blasts Keweenaw

NOTE: This story was posted at 7:20 a.m. on November 27th. It contains timely information which may be out of date if read later.

Mother Nature has thrown a monkey wrench into a lot of Thanksgiving travel plans with an ill-timed storm.

Most areas could see a foot or more of snow, with 20 inches possible in the Huron Mountains. Northeasterly winds could gust to 50 miles per hour along the shoreline, causing drifting and white-out conditions.

Most of the region is under a Winter Storm Warning. The exception is Keweenaw County, which is under a Blizzard Warning. A Lakeshore Flood Warning is also in effect for the windward coast.

Because of the developing storm, all schools in the region are closed today. Some other offices are closed, and some events have been canceled. See our up-to-date list here.

At the Houghton County Memorial Airport, manager Dennis Hext says it’s just business as usual, on the ground…

It’s that low ceiling, visibility thing that’s causing problems. Last night’s flight in from Chicago was pushed back until this morning because of the storm. Because of that, this morning’s return flight to Chicago will leave several hours late. Check the airport flight schedule here.

Houghton County road crews are hard at work. Even though the snow is expected to end late today, Road Commission Engineer Kevin Harju says they’ll be following up on the holiday tomorrow…

If you’re driving, expect snow-covered and slippery roads, with significant drifts and areas of near-zero visibility.
