Obituary: Kathryn R. Olson

As received from the O’Neill-Dennis Funeral Home:

Eagle Harbor, MI: Kathryn R. Olson, 97, formerly of Houghton and Eagle Harbor, passed away at her current residence in Grand Rapids on Sunday, November 17, 2019.

She was born in Detroit to the late Mabel and Clarence Riney. She attended Cooley High in Detroit, graduating in 1940. She graduated from Michigan State University in 1944 with a degree in Home Economics Institution Administration.

She then worked in hotel administration from 1944 to 1946 at Statler Hotels in Buffalo, Cleveland, and Detroit. She then worked for Detroit Edison in several capacities from 1946 until her retirement in 1976.

In 1973 she met Robert Olson and they married on August 13, 1976 and resided in Houghton until Bob’s passing on May 6, 1979. In 2000 Kathryn moved to Clark Retirement Communities in Grand Rapids.

Kathryn had a favorite spot in Eagle Harbor on Lake Superior. She spent many summers and autumns enjoying the view and her many neighbors, friends, and reltives.

Kathryn was blessed with the friendship of many friends, neighbors and relatives of all ages and many who enjoyed spending attitude adjustment time and “sip and nibble” gatherings with her.

She worked at making friends and keeping in touch with them. Some were of the barking variety, and there was room in the front porch for them as well, plus treats from her pockets.

A counted cross stitch hanging in her townhouse at Clark reads “Count your age by friends, not years! Count your life by smiles, not tears!” You know she lived her life to the fullest. Hers was a good long life.

Interment arrangements scheduled for Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. The O’Neill-Dennis Funeral Home in Hancock is in charge of the arrangements. To leave online condolences, please go to www.oneilldennisfh.com
