Alyce Tossava Thorpe, 95 residing at home in Calumet, passed on Friday Nov. 15th. Alyce was born in Toledo, Ohio the end of Feb. 1924, daughter of Emil and Miriam (Hammary) Tossava. Her family moved several times between Ohio and Detroit, Mi., Ultimately moving up to Calumet. Alyce moved to Chicago to study at the Art Institute of Chicago and to fund her studies took a job at Container Corp. of America. In 1962 she decided to continue her studies in Italy all the while able to work at Container Corp. branch in Florence. While continuing her studies over seas she met her future husband of 46 years, William Thorpe. She briefly returned to the Keweenaw to help care for her mother. Alyce joined Bill in Mexico City, Mexico after his relocation where they married.. The Thorpes lived in Mexico, Spain and Columbia before retiring to the Keweenaw in the early 1980’s. Alyce became very involved with the League of Women voters, the Hancock Home Study Club, the Calumet Art Center, CCCAC, and various other organizations. She was an avid gardener with her peonies being her pride and joy. She was also an accomplished gourmet cook and loved entertaining her family and friends.
Alyce is preceded by her parents, brother David Tossava and husband Bill.
Alyce is survived by numerous cousins here in the Copper Country and across the U.S.. Per Alyce’s wishes cremation has taken place and there will be a private memorial service held in July of 2020.
