MLB
The Detroit Tigers could lose two of their minor league affiliates under a proposal made by Major League Baseball. The umbrella agreement between MLB and its minor league affiliates expires after the end of next season. MLB covers salaries of all minor league players, along with some additional costs. Minor league teams pay coaches, and local operating expenses. MLB wants to cut costs by reducing the number of players in the system, and eliminating 42 minor league franchises – around a quarter of all minor league teams. The list leaked to the New York Times includes Detroit’s Double-A affiliate in Erie, Pennsylvania, and short season Class A team in Connecticut.
