Efforts to make sure local children have happy Christmases are underway.
Toys for Tots has set out drop-off boxes for new, unwrapped toys at Walmart, Walgreen’s, Joey’s, Swift Hardware, Houghton Powersports, Auto Value in Houghton and Calumet, Incredible Bank in Calumet, and Superior National Bank branches in Baraga and L’Anse.
The CLK Rotary Club recently donated $1,350 to Keweenaw County’s No Child Without a Christmas campaign.
The Angel Tree is up at the New Beginnings Angel Mission in Calumet. Community members can select names from the tree, and purchase items that have been requested, or make a financial donation so that Angel Mission staff members can purchase the items.
Families who have children they would like to add to the Angel Tree can contact the Angel Mission.
The Salvation Army has set up a similar Angel Tree at the Houghton Walmart.
The Salvation Army continues to take sign-ups for Christmas toys and food baskets. Apply at their office in Hancock between 9:00 and 3:00, or this evening between 6:00 and 8:00 at the Burger King in Calumet. Bring photo ID, proof of ages of household members, and verification of income.
