Rough Waters Force Ships Into Keweenaw Bay

Gusty winds and heavy waves roiled Lake Superior overnight.

A Lakeshore Flood Advisory was issued last evening, as the western and northern shoreline of Keweenaw County were pounded by westerly winds up to 45 miles per hour, and waves higher than 12 feet.

Rough conditions on the big lake prompted two vessels to seek safe harbor in Keweenaw Bay.

The self-unloading carriers CSL Tadoussac and the Walter J. McCarthy, Jr. anchored overnight just off the Lower Entrance. At nearly 1,000 feet, the McCarthy is one of the largest ships on the lake.

Waves and winds began diminishing early this morning.
