The City of Houghton took another step forward toward finding a new home for municipal offices and the police department last night.
Midwest Loan Services has been leasing the upper floors of the existing City Center. The company wishes to take over the whole building, and has offered to purchase it.
At a joint meeting, members of the City Council and the Planning Commission agreed to look at two options.
One would be construction of a new building and parking deck on the site of the current indoor parking garage just east of the current City Center – behind the existing Subway restaurant. Officials estimate that would cost around $4.5 million.
The other option is to purchase and renovate the building that currently houses the Continental Fire Company. The cost of that project is estimated to be as much as $1.5 million. The Continental building began its life as a city fire station, and also housed Michigan Tech’s first classes.
