The Houghton-Portage Township School District remains one of the state’s biggest beneficiaries of the School of Choice program.
44 percent of the kids who attend Houghton Elementary, Middle and High School come from other districts. Houghton lost 103 students to other districts this year, but brought in 619, for a net gain of 516. 175 of the out-of-district students come across the bridge from Hancock.
Hancock saw a net loss of 217 students to other districts this year.
The other two districts on the upside are Calumet, with a net gain of 51 students… and Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, with a net gain of 32. L’Anse had a net loss of 10 students… Adams Township had a net loss of 24 students… Lake Linden-Hubbell a net loss of 62… Baraga a net loss of 65… Chassell a net loss of 99… and Stanton Township a net loss of 194 to school of choice.
The state figures do not include students who enroll in private schools, such as Sacred Heart School in L’Anse, or the Copper Country Christian School.
