Lake Linden-Hubbell advanced to the Division Eight district championship game by shutting down West Iron County 36-14 yesterday.
The Lakes scored on their opening drive, when Carter Crouch connected with Caleb Gregoire on a 12-yard TD toss. The two-point conversion run by Caleb Klein was good. The rest of the half was uneventful, until Lake Linden took over on their own 46 yard line after a Wykons punt. Five plays later, Crouch hit William Lyons with a 12-yard pass. The extra point attempt failed, and the Lakes went to the locker room with a 14-0 lead.
After a scoreless third quarter, Caleb Gregoire capped an eight-play drive with a 27-yard touchdown run in the opening minute of the fourth period. The two-point attempt failed. This time, West Iron County responded, as quarterback Trey Bociek capped a quick, five-play, 57-yard drive with a one-yard keeper. The extra point kick narrowed the gap to 24-7, but only for a few seconds. On the first play after the kickoff, Caleb Gregoire broke loose for a 57-yard touchdown run. Jesse Hill ran in the two-point conversion. After getting the ball back on downs, Caleb Gregoire iced the game with a 35-yard TD dash. Barndon Lavigne ran in the two-point conversion. The Wykons added a final score when Bociek found Noah Thomson in the endzone with a five-yard pass in the closing minutes.
The Lakes will play at Ishpeming in the Division Eight district title game next weekend. The Hematites eliminated Bark River-Harris 48-8 Friday night.
Calumet will host Menominee in the Division Six district title game next weekend. The Maroons continued their late-season surge by wiping out Westwood 48-18 yesterday. Calumet swamped Negaunee 42-14 Friday night.
We will broadcast both playoff games next weekend. – In Eight-Player Division One, Brimley lost to Suttons Bay 36-14.
– In Eight-Player Division Two, North Central eliminated Forest Park 46-28, and Pickford cruised past Engadine 57-12. Cedarville eliminated Posen 46-26, and will face Hillman next week.
Finlandia
The Finlandia University women’s soccer team advanced to the American Collegiate Athletic Association championship game by defeating Mills College 1-0 in the semifinals yesterday. Ericka Lambert’s goal off an assist from Kirsten L’Esperance in the 86th minute gave the Lions the win. Finlandia dominated the action, outshooting the Cyclones 22-4.
The Lions will face host U-C Santa Cruz for the title this afternoon at 2:00. The Banana Slugs eliminated Pratt Institute 12-0 yesterday. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, the Finlandia broadcast will begin at 1:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
The Finlandia men’s soccer team lost 7-2 to Wisconsin-Whitewater in the ACAA tournament semifinals yesterday in Hudson, New Hampshire. The Lions finish the season with a record of 4-12-1.
The Finlandia women’s hockey team fell 5-2 at Saint Catherine yesterday. Kylee Dyni and Brenna Ceglar scored for the Lions.
The Lions men’s hockey team lost 5-1 at Wisconsin-River Falls last night. Connor Hannon scored the Lions’ only goal.
At snowy McAfee Field yesterday afternoon, the Finlandia football team dropped a 48-24 decision to Adrian College. D.J. Davis ran for three touchdowns, as the Lions set a new team record with 431 yards of total offense.

At equally snowy Sherman Field, the Michigan Tech football team lost to second-ranked Ferris State 52-0 yesterday. The Bulldogs’ offense outgained the Huskies 615 yards to 120.
The 21st-ranked MTU volleyball team swept Northern Michigan University 3-0 (27-25, 25-20, 25-21) yesterday. The Huskies have won eight straight matches.
The Tech soccer plays at Purdue Northwest today.
The Northern Michigan University football squad lost 28-10 at Northwood yesterday.
WCHA
The Michigan Tech hockey team dropped a 3-1 decision at North Dakota in the US Hockey Hall of Fame Game last night. Justin Misiak scored early for the Huskies, but the Fighting Hawks tied the game late in the first period, scored the game-winner in the third, and added a late empty-netter.
The NMU hockey team completed a sweep of Alabama Huntsville with a 4-2 victory last evening.

The Calumet Wolverines lost 6-3 to the Mosinee Papermakers last night.
The result of the Portage Lake Pioneers’ game against the Fox Cities Ice Dogs was not reported.

The Detroit Red Wings’ early-season swoon continued with a 4-0 loss to the Florida Panthers last night. Jonathan Bernier made 37 saves in the loss. The injury-riddled Detroit Pistons pulled out a 113-109 victory over the Brooklyn Nets last night. Playing without Blake Griffin, Reggie Jackson, Derrick Rose and Tim Frazier, Andre Dummond led the team with 25 points and 20 rebounds. Luke Kennard added 24 points. The Pistons visit the Washington Wizards tomorrow.
NFL
In the NFL today, the Detroit Lions visit the Oakland Raiders for a 4:05 game. Pregame coverage will begin at 2:00 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Lions have signed linebacker Christian Jones to a two-year contract extension.
