U.P. Population Projections Fall

Population projections for Michigan released recently by the Department of Technology, Management and Budget don’t bode well for the Upper Peninsula.

On the whole, Michigan’s population is expected to grow by about a half-million people over the next decade. Much of that gain will be focused in the Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids areas, which each could expand by about 12 percent.

Only three counties in the U.P are expected to see population growth between now and 2030.

Houghton County leads the way at five percent. Marquette County is expected to grow around three percent, and Schoolcraft County a little over one percent.

All the rest of the U.P.’s counties are expected to lose residents – and the three hardest-hit are in the Copper Country. Baraga County is projected at an eight percent loss, Keweenaw County at a 16 percent loss, and Ontonagon County at a nearly 18 percent loss.
