High School
In high school football yesterday, Lake Linden-Hubbell turned in an impressive 42-0 rout of Bark River-Harris. The Lakes scored on their first three possessions. Carter Crouch hit Cole Gregoire for a 29-yard touchdown pass, then ran 79 yards for their second score. After the Broncos fumbled the ensuing kickoff, he capped a short drive with a one-yard sneak late in the first quarter.
After a scoreless second quarter, Lake Linden put the game away with two consecutive one-play drives in the third quarter. After Luke Marcotte intercepted a pass at the Bark River 20 yard line, Caleb Gregoire ran the distance on the first play from scrimmage. A minute later, the Lakes recovered a Broncos fumble, and Crouch connected with Caleb for a 45 yard touchdown pass. Bode Brinkman added a late score with a one-yard run.
The Lakes would clinch a playoff berth with a home win over Manistique next Saturday. Pregame coverage will begin at 1:10 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
In volleyball yesterday, Calumet defeated Gwinn 2-0 in the championship match at the WestPAC Tournament. Other scores were not reported.
The Hancock and Chassell girls cross country teams both won U.P. championships yesterday.
Chassell easily outran Mid-Peninsula to claim the Division Three crown. Kamryn Sohlden, Paige Sleeman, Ayla Miller and Gwen Kangas finished fifth through eighth individually. It’s the third straight U.P. title for the Panthers, and the fourth in the last five years.
Hancock’s Maylie Kilpela won the Division Two meet. Sierra Driscoll, Mackenna Nuttall and Jacie Anderson placed fifth, sixth and ninth as the Bulldogs outpaced second place Saint Ignace. It’s the second straight U.P. title for Hancock.
Houghton finished fourth in a closely packed Division One competition. Ingrid Seagren placed third individually, and Sage Resch-Chimmer 10th.
On the boys side, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City came in second behind Rudyard in Division Three. Individually, Davin Hill was sixth, and John Paul Norland seventh. Jeffers finished fourth in the team competition, and Chassell fifth. Daba Holmes of the Panthers placed eighth individually.
No area schools qualified in the team competition in Division Two. Baraga’s James Stein was top local individual runner, finishing 15th.
Houghton’s Joe Wood won the individual title in Division One. As a team, the Gremlins finished a close third, behind Marquette and Sault Ste. Marie. Branden Peterson came in 10th individually. Calumet placed seventh in the team competition.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University volleyball team lost 3-0 to Wisconsin-River Falls, and 3-0 to Hamline University yesterday.
The Lions football team scored on a flea-flicker on the game’s first play, but went on to lose 79-12 to Hope College yesterday. The opening touchdown came after quarterback Darin Johnson handed the ball off to running back Bailey Harris. Harris tossed the ball back to Johnson, who hit receiver Joshua Eve. Eve raced 83 yards to the end zone, to complete the longest passing play in Finlandia history. Johnson scored on a 50-yard run late in the first quarter. The Dutchmen scored nine touchdowns in the first half.
The Finlandia women’s soccer team plays at Olivet College this morning.
The Finlandia softball team will face Bay College in a special doubleheader today at noon at McAfee Field. The event will raise money to help Hancock City Manager Barry Givens with medical expenses.
WCHA
The Northern Michigan University hockey team edged Boston University 4-3 last night.
The Michigan Tech hockey team has the weekend off.
GLIAC
The 24th-ranked Michigan Tech volleyball team wrapped up the Midwest Region Crossover by defeating Cedarville 3-1 (25-16, 25-19. 23-25, 25-21), and Illinois-Springfield 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-23) yesterday. It’s the first time the Huskies have won all three of their games at the crossover.
The Huskies soccer team will host Grand Valley State today at noon.
The Tech football team scored 30 points in the first half, .and cruised past Davenport University 30-17 yesterday. Will Ark hit Ben Hartley with two touchdown passes. Hartley later threw a TD strike to Jordan Janssen. Jared Smith scored on a one-yard run, and Evan Gornick kicked a field goal.
The NMU football team lost 45-17 to Grand Valley State yesterday.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings host the Vancouver Canucks Tuesday. Pregame coverage begins at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Pistons open the regular season Wednesday at Indiana. Listen for selected Pistons regular-season games again this year on 99.3 The Lift.
MLB
José Altuve’s home run in the bottom of the ninth gave the Astros a 6-4 victory over the Yankees last night, and earned Houston its second American League pennant in three years.
The Astros will host the Washington Nationals in game one of the World Series Tuesday night.
NFL
In the NFL today, the Green Bay Packers entertain the Oakland Raiders in a 1:00 game. The Detroit Lions host the Minnesota Vikings in a 1:00 contest. Pregame coverage begins at 11:00 on 99.3 The Lift.
LSPR
Oliver Solberg won the Lake Superior Performance Rally yesterday. Solberg finished nearly nine minutes ahead of Barry McKenna. Piotr Fetela was third. McKenna’s performance was good enough to secure second place in the season standings. Solberg passed Fetela to claim third place for the season. David Higgins was forced out of the race after a crash, but had already clinched the season championship.
Among local drivers competing in the regional side of the event, Al Dantes Jr. came in 15th. Matt Hukki battled car problems, and placed 24th.
