Calumet Blasts Hancock – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school football last night…
– Calumet crushed Hancock 42-6. Dryden Nelson and Nick Djerf each scored twice for the Copper Kings, and Scott Loukus threw two touchdown passes.
 – Houghton lost at Negaunee 35-0.
 – L’Anse fell to Iron Mountain 51-6. Jonah Dowd ran for the Purple Hornets’ only touchdown late in the first half.
 – Ontonagon lost to North Dickinson 54-22.

Today…
– Lake Linden-Hubbell travels to Bark River-Harris. Coverage will begin at 12:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

In volleyball today, Calumet, Houghton and Hancock play at the WestPAC Tournament at Westwood.

In cross country, the U.P. finals will be held today at Gentz’s Homestead Golf Course in Marquette.

Finlandia

The Finlandia University volleyball team lost 3-0 (25-23, 25-12, 25-14) at Crown College last night.

The Lions face Wisconsin-River Falls and Hamline University in a triangular at Hamline today.

The Lions football team entertains Hope College today at noon.

The Finlandia softball team will face Bay College in a special doubleheader tomorrow at McAfee Field. The event will raise money to help Hancock City Manager Barry Givens with medical expenses. Givens is fighting kidney cancer, and has been on medical leave. Admission will be by donation. Along with the games, there will be raffles and a chuck a ball fundraiser. The softball benefit begins at noon.

WCHA

The Northern Michigan University hockey team scored three times in the third period to salvage a 4-4 tie at Boston University last night. Those teams play again tonight. 

The Michigan Tech hockey team has the weekend off.

GLIAC

The Michigan Tech volleyball team dropped the first set, then came back to defeat Drury 3-1 (21-25, 25-16, 26-24, 25-19) in their opening match at the Midwest Region Crossover in Indanapolis yesterday. The Huskies will face Cedarville and Illinois-Springfield today.

The Huskies soccer team lost 3-0 to Davenport University yesterday. Tech will host Grand Valley State tomorrow at noon.

The Tech football team plays at Davenport today.

The NMU football team entertains Grand Valley State today.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings dropped their fourth straight game last night, falling 2-1 to the Edmonton Oilers. Mike Green’s first goal of the season was Detroit’s only score. Jonathan Bernier made 31 saves.

The Wings host the Vancouver Canucks Tuesday. Pregame coverage begins at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

MLB

The Yankees defeated Justin Verlander and the Astros 4-1 last night. Houston leads the American League Championship Series three games to two, with game six tonight in Houston.

NFL

In the NFL tomorrow, the Green Bay Packers entertain the Oakland Raiders in a 1:00 game. The Detroit Lions host the Minnesota Vikings in a 1:00 contest. Pregame coverage begins at 11:00 on 99.3 The Lift.

LSPR

Oliver Solberg holds the lead after the first day of competition in the Lake Superior Performance Rally yesterday. Solberg has a two-and-a-half-minute advantage over Barry McKenna. David Higgins, who has already wrapped up the American Rally Association season championship, won the first four stages yesterday, but his car stalled out on stage five, hit a tree stump and suffered suspension damage. Solberg and McKenna are two of the three drivers fighting for second place in the season standings. The third driver in that battle, Piotr Fetela, is currently in fourth place.

Fans can see the cars at the parc expose at 9:00 at L’Anse Waterfront Park. After today’s runs, the ceremonial final stage will begin just after 5:00 in downtown Houghton. Lakeshore Drive will be closed beginning at 1:00 this afternoon to accommodate the race.
