Opt-In? Opt-Out? House Considers Change in State Park Passport

A state house committee is considering a proposal that would reverse the process of adding a state park passport to your car license plate.

Currently, it’s an opt-in feature. You pay an extra $11.00 to get year-round access to Michigan State Parks. About one-third of license plates sold in Michigan have the passport added.

Legislation being pushed by Republican Representative Gary Howell of North Branch would make it an opt-out feature. The $11.00 charge would be included with each license plate, unless you say you don’t want it.

Howell thinks the change could boost annual park revenues from $29 million to $50 million or more.

The measure would also increase the share of that money that goes to local parks from 10 percent to 15 percent.

The House Transportation Committee was scheduled to hold hearings on the bills today.
