Health Department Explains Julio Site Contamination

We’re learning a bit more about the contamination found at the old Julio Construction Company property on M-26 in Ripley.

The Western U.P. Health Department declared the site contaminated last week, after testing by the State Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy found some nasty things…

That’s Health Department Health Officer Kate Beer, who says EGLE’s testing was part of a long-term plan to review many old industrial sites along the waterfront. The problem with asbestos?

As for immediate plans, the property is still owned by the Julio family, which has started limiting access. As for clean-up, it could take years for a plan to be developed, and money found to implement it.

Beer says there’s no evidence that any contamination has reached the Portage. The Franklin Township water supply has been carefully monitored for years, and has shown no problems.
