The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community has added a vehicle to its fire-fighting fleet, thanks to the Hiawatha National Forest.
The Type 6 fire engine was scheduled for replacement as part of the federal government’s regular cycle. It was donated to the KBIC through the Federal Excess Personal Property program.
A Type 6 fire engine is a relatively small, mobile truck that is commonly used to fight brush fires.
KBIC Director of Fire and Emergency Management Tom Chosa said the vehicle will help the tribe’s efforts to combat fires locally, as well as across the region and the nation.
