Wings Delight Hockeyville Crowd – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball last night…
– Hancock v Iron Mountain – no report.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell cruised past Ontonagon 3-0 (
25-15, 25-15, 25-13).
– L’Anse fought past Jeffers 3-2 (
17-25, 25-23, 25-18, 20-25, 16-14).

In cross country, the Houghton girls dominated the Tracy Strom Invitational at the Al Quaal Preserve yesterday. Four Gremlins earned top-10 finishes individually, with Ingrid Seagren third, and Maria Velat fourth. Hancock’s Adia Keranen placed 10th, but the Bulldogs didn’t start enough runners to qualify in the team competition.

Joe Wood of Houghton won the boys individual title, but the Gremlins finished second to Ishpeming in the team competition.

– Unbeaten Calumet travels to Norway.
– Houghton entertains Gwinn. Broadcast coverage will begin at 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
– Hancock welcomes Munising.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell plays at L’Anse.
– Ontonagon hosts Stephenson in a game that will be played at the Ewen-Trout Creek field.

Finlandia

The Finlandia University men’s soccer team lost 4-0 at North Central University yesterday. 

Both Lions soccer teams will play at the University of Northwestern in Saint Paul tonight. 

The Finlandia volleyball team entertains Maranatha Baptist tomorrow at 11:00 at the Paavo Nurmi Center.

The Finlandia football team is off this weekend.

GLIAC

The Michigan Tech soccer team hosts Purdue Northwest this afternoon at 5:00.

The MTU volleyball team entertains Saginaw Valley State tonight at 7:00, and Lake Superior State tomorrow at 4:00.

The Huskies football team will host Grand Valley State in the homecoming game tomorrow at 1:00. At tomorrow’s game, the renovated facility around Sherman Field will be christened Kearly Stadium, in honor of former Tech football coaches Ted and Tom Kearly. The official name will now be Sherman Field at Kearly Stadium.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers lost to the Minnesota Twins 10-4 yesterday. It was Detroit’s 59th loss at home this season, which ties a major league record. Jordan Zimmermann gave up six runs before leaving in the fifth inning. He became the first Tigers pitcher in more than a century to start at least 20 games, and win just one. Victor Reyes had two hits and drove in two runs.

The Tigers begin their final series of the season with a doubleheader against the White Sox at Chicago today. Pregame coverage begins at 4:15 on 99.3 The Lift. 

The Milwaukee Brewers continued their torrid September with a 5-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds yesterday. Chase Anderson gave up a run in the first , but no more as finished five innings, and earned the win. The Crew took control with four runs in the fourth, powered by a three-run Orlando Arcia double.

The Brewers begin their final series of the regular season against the Rockies in Colorado tonight. Zach Davies will start against Antonio Senzatela.

The Cardinals were off yesterday, so Milwaukee now trails Saint Louis by one game in the National League Central Division. Each team has three games remaining. The Nationals won, and hold a one-game edge over the Brewers in the race for home field advantage in the wild card game.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings treated their Copper Country fans to a 4-1 exhibition victory over the Saint Louis Blues in the Kraft Hockeyville game at the Calumet Colosseum last night. Anthony Mantha scored Detroit’s first two goals. Michael Rasmussen netted the second two. Calvin Pickard made 36 saves. But, for coach Jeff Blashill, who was raised in Sault Ste. Marie, the real star of the evening was the location… [BLASHILL A].

The Wings will host the Toronto Maple Leafs in their next-to-last pregame tilt tonight. Listen for regular-season Wings broadcasts on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL

The Green Bay Packers lost to the Philadelphia Eagles 34-27 in last night’s NFL game. Philly took command with three touchdowns in the second quarter. Aaron Rodgers threw for 422 yards and two touchdowns, but Green Bay running backs were held to just 31 yards rushing. The Pack had a chance to tie the game with a first-and-goal from the one-yard line late in the fourth quarter, but threw four straight incompletions.
