Global Climate Strike Comes to U.P.

Some Upper Peninsula residents will join others around the world today in what’s being called a “global climate strike.”

Worldwide, more than 3,000 events have been organized in more than 130 nations.

In the Copper Country, students and community members will demonstrate at the Houghton-Hancock Bridge from 4:00 until 7:00. Those interested in taking part should meet on the Houghton side, near the old depot.

A sailboat rally is also planned near the bridge, but Hancock City officials say they’ve been told the bridge will not be opened for boat traffic during the event.

In Marquette, demonstrators will gather between noon and 2:00 at the Wildcat Statue on the Northern Michigan University Campus, and will then travel to United States Senator Gary Peters’ Upper Peninsula office.
