Wins for MTU Football, Volleyball – Sunday Sports Wrap

Finlandia

The Finlandia University football team hung tough early, but wound up losing to Ripon College 45-12 yesterday. The teams traded touchdowns in the first quarter, with DJ Davis scoring on a two-yard run for the Lions. The Redhawks then then took control with 31 points in the second quarter. After a scoreless third quarter, the teams swapped TD in the fourth quarter. Darin Johnson scored FinnU’s final touchdown on a four-yard run.

During halftime at yesterday’s game, Finlandia saluted its 2018-2019 Athletes of the Year. Dillion Hueckstaedt, who led the MIAA in several defensive categories as a senior football linebacker last fall, won the male award. The female award went to soccer standout Kirsten L’Esperance.

The Finlandia University women’s soccer team defeated Northland College 3-1 yesterday morning. L’Esperance, Mylea Harangozo, and Addie Budzinski scored for the Lions, who outshot the Muskies 23-7. Samantha Linteo stopped one of two shots on goal.

The Finlandia men’s soccer team fell to Franklin College 2-0 yesterday.

GLIAC

The Michigan Tech football team improved to 2-0 with a 24-19 victory at McKendree University yesterday afternoon. Jordan Ferguson, Will Ark and Jacob Wenzlick ran for touchdowns, and Evan Gornick kicked a 26 yard field goal. Ark completed 10 of 19 passes for 137 yards, and also led the team with 73 yards rushing.

The Northern Michigan University football team lost to UT-Permian Basin 40-24 in Texas yesterday.

The Tech volleyball team wrapped up its run at the Huskies Classic in Saint Cloud, Minnesota yesterday with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-12, 25-18) victory over Minnesota-Crookston. MacAuley Peterson had 11 kills, and Grace Novotney made 14 digs.

The MTU soccer team plays at Minnesota-Crookston today.

MLB

John Hicks’ grand slam home run in the bottom of the 12th inning powered the Detroit Tigers to an 8-4 victory over the Baltimore Orioles last night. Harold Castro and Victor Reyes also homered for Detroit. Daniel Norris and Drew VerHagen combined to throw seven scoreless innings.

The Tigers host the Orioles again this afternoon. Edwin Jackson will pitch against Asher Wojciechowski. Because of Lions football on 99.3 The Lift, Tigers pregame coverage begins at 12:45 on KBear 102.3. 

The Milwaukee Brewers came from behind to beat the Saint Louis Cardinals 5-2 last evening. The Cards scored twice off Jordan Lyles in the second inning, but Lyles settled down, and completed six frames. Mike Moustakas and Yasmani Grandal homered for the Crew.

The Brewers play the Cardinals in Saint Louis again this afternoon. Chase Anderson will start against Michael Wacha.

The Cubs won again, so Saint Louis now leads the National League Central Division by three games over Chicago, with Milwaukee four games back, and a game behind the Cubs in the race for the final wild card playoff berth.

NFL

The Green Bay Packers host the Minnesota Vikings in a 1:00 game today. The Detroit Lions entertain the Los Angeles Chargers in a 1:00 contest. Pregame coverage will begin at 11:00 on 99.3 The Lift.
