Yoopers will celebrate the telephone area code that has become one of the best-known identifiers of the Upper Peninsula.
The 906 area code was installed on March 19th, 1961, and is the largest area code in Michigan.
Before that, the U-P was part of the 616 area code, which also included all of the western lower peninsula, and now includes just the Grand Rapids area.
