A state audit has found problems in the management of the Michigan Office of the Great Lakes.
The report signed by Auditor General Doug Ringler rates the overall work of the office as “moderately effective.”
It reported weaknesses, though, in the way the office monitored how grant money was used. Appropriate background work to assess grant recipients was not completed in 14 of 16 cases reviewed. Federal grant-writing rules were sometimes ignored. And the Office hadn’t updated required Remedial Action Plans for some designated Areas of Concern in many years. The longest site without an update is the Torch Lake site in Houghton County, which was last revised in 2007.
In the final report, officials from Michigan’s Department of Environment and the Great Lakes acknowledged the failures, and promised to do better. See the full audit here.
