The largest of the Soo Locks was closed yesterday, when a concrete sill beneath one of the gates eroded. Shipping traffic through the Poe Lock was halted for more than eight hours as a temporary repair was completed. A full repair will need to wait until shipping ends this winter. The Poe is the only lock large enough to accommodate most of the Great Lakes commercial shipping traffic. President Trump has approved funding for the design of a second lock the size of the Poe. Construction contracts could be awarded as early as next summer, but it could be 2030 before the new lock will be ready.
