New Digital Tools Make Planning A Trip To The Keweenaw Easier

Planning a visit to the Keweenaw Peninsula just got a lot easier.

The Keweenaw Convention & Visitors Bureau launched two digital tools this month to streamline trips to the area: an online portal which allows visitors to view availability and rates for local lodging accommodations and the interactive Keweenaw Adventure Guide.

With the additions, visitors can now explore the area using an interactive web map, get the latest news on community events and attractions, and directly book lodging accommodations all from the same website.

“With the new online tools, we have available we are a one stop shop for visitors and planning your trip to the Copper Country has never been easier,” explained Dianne St. Amour, KCVB board president.

With the increase in popularity of online travel agency (OTA) sites like Hotel.com and Expedia, cost conscious consumers often believe booking directly with hotels is a bad financial move. But according to Brad Barnett, KCVB executive director, visitors may be missing out by not booking directly with lodging providers. “Comparing rates and availability for lodging can take a lot of time, especially when you’re not familiar with a destination. That’s helped lead to the OTAs’ boom in popularity,” explained Barnett. “But booking directly with hotels can open the door to additional free complimentary services and bonuses to rewards programs. Not to mention comparable, or event cheaper, room rates.”

The online search engine allows visitors to compare room rates and availability for many of the area’s lodging accommodations based on travel dates and desired destination.

The tool then provides visitors a list of businesses that meet their lodging needs and allows them to complete the booking process on the selected business’ website.  “This can help travelers avoid additional fees added to their bill when booking through OTA websites,” added Barnett.

The online Keweenaw Adventure Guide is an interactive web map to help visitors find local attractions like restaurants, shopping, and outdoor recreation.

Visitors can use the map’s filter options to select the amenities of interest, and then navigate the map to discover where the amenities are located and other nearby attractions.

“This is such a great tool to demonstrate how much the Keweenaw has to offer visitors, explained Barnett. “Travelers can use the map to plan anything from waterfall hikes to pub crawls based on what part of the Keweenaw they want to explore.”

The online map is mobile friendly and will be updated regularly.
