The Detroit Tigers’ bats were quiet for most of last night’s game, as they lost to the Houston Astros 6-3The Bengals were blanked through eight innings, and finally got on the board with homers from John Hicks and Niko Goodrum in the ninth. They threatened to tie the game after Travis Demeritte and Ronny Rodriguez walked, but Dawel Lugo’s long fly ball was caught at the outfield wall to end the game. Jordan Zimmermann gave up two runs on three hits over five innings, and took the loss.

The Tigers open a series against the Twins in Minnesota tonight. Drew VerHagen will start against José Berríos. Because of Lions football, Tigers pregame coverage will begin at 7:45 on KBear 102.3.

Detroit outfielder Christin Stewart has passed concussion protocol, and been brought off the injured list – but won’t be rejoining the Tigers. He’s been assigned to Toledo to work on his defense. Detroit has also sent pitcher Tyler Alexander back to Toledo. He’d been filling an opening created by Matthew Boyd’s absence on the paternity list. Boyd is expected to return to the starting rotation Sunday.

The Milwaukee Brewers had yesterday off, and will host the Arizona Diamondbacks tonight. Jordan Lyles will start against Merrill Kelly.

NFL

Daniel Carlson’s third field goal of the night with less than three minutes remaining gave the Oakland Raiders a 22-21 preseason victory over the Green Bay Packers last night. All of Green Bay’s points came in the second quarter. With quarterback Aaron Rodgers again held out, Tim Boyle took most of the snaps, and completed 16 of 25 attempts for 191 yards and two touchdowns.

The game was played in Winnipeg, on the field used by the Canadian Football League’s Blue Bombers. Because the CFL field is configured differently, the standard goalposts had to be removed – leaving holes near the goal lines. To avoid endangering players, the game was played on an 80-yard field.

The Detroit Lions host the Buffalo Bills in their third preseason game tonight. Kickoff is at 8:00 on 99.3 The Lift.

MTU

Michigan Tech is laying the groundwork for a varsity esports program. The university has posted a position for a head coach. Athletic Director Suzanne Sanregret says they hope to be ready to compete at a varsity level during the 2020-2021 season. Esports involves teams competing in online games. More than 130 colleges across the nation have launched teams, although MTU’s will be the first in Michigan. The program will be affiliated with the National Association of Collegiate Esports.

Our high school football broadcasts kick off Thursday night, as Calumet entertains the Gogebic Miners. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
