The end of summer is approaching and the stores are full of back to school supplies and that can only mean one thing–it’s time for the Houghton County Fair!
The fair opens at the fairgrounds in Hancock Thursday afternoon and continues until Sunday evening, featuring rides on the Midway, animals, shows, and all the great off-road events in the main arena.
The bidding on the Junior Market Livestock Auction begins at 5:30pm on Friday and Fair Board Member Bonnie DeCaire-Jones encourages people to come out and support these kids.
“Those kids work really, really hard to get that steer or lamb or hog ready for the fair, then probably 90 percent of the kids use that money for college and I’ve known some kids that have paid for their entire college education just from their market animal and so they can really use all the community help in coming out and bidding their animals up and getting a good price for them,” said DeCaire-Jones.
New and returning favorites include the Grizzly Experience with live bears and the Chicago Honey Bear Dancers, which are humans performing multiple shows and youth workshops.
DeCaire-Jones said, “We try to get stuff that people aren’t going to see up here on a regular basis—bring something new to the area so that people have a new experience.”
Of course, the fair wouldn’t be complete without the Monster Trucks on Saturday night and the Demolition Derby on Sunday.
The rides, petting zoo, and exhibit buildings open at 3pm on Thursday.
