MTU Releases 2019-2020 Hoops Schedules – Thursday Sports Wrap

MLB

Edwin Jackson won his second straight start, as the Detroit Tigers edged the Seattle Mariners 3-2 last night. Jackson gave up two runs over five innings. He got a big assist from catcher Jake Rogers, who threw out Keon Broxton trying to steal second base to end the third inning, and snuffed out a threat in the seventh inning by catching J.P. Crawford off first base with a perfect throw to John Hicks

The Tigers host the Mariners again tonight. Spencer Turnbull will start against Sam Tuivailala. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Best wishes to Detroit Tigers PA announcer Jay Allen. Allen revealed this week that he has been diagnosed with stage four bile duct cancer, that has spread to his liver and lungs. Allen took over the Comerica Park microphone this spring after many years as a game announcer in Grand Rapids. A GoFundMe page has been set up to provide assistance here.

Trent Grisham’s three-run homer in the eighth inning lifted the Milwaukee Brewers to a 6-5 victory over the Minnesota Twins yesterday. The comeback overcame a rocky start by Gio Gonzalez, who gave up all five Twins runs before leaving in the fourth inning.

The Brewers have today off, and will open a set against the Nationals in Washington tomorrow night. Adrian Houser will start against Patrick Corbin.

Milwaukee has called up reliever Ray Black. Black was obtained in the recent trade that sent infield prospect Mauricio Dubon to the San Diego Padres. To make room, they sent Jake Faria down to San Antonio.

Twilight League

Game two of the Twilight Baseball League championship series will be played tonight, as Dean Kangas State Farm faces REL-Mohawk Technologies at the Hancock Driving Park. State Farm won the opening game of the best-of-three series 7-4 Tuesday night. If regular-season champion REL can tie up the series tonight, game three has tentatively been set for next Tuesday. Our broadcast coverage of tonight’s contest will begin around 6:15 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

GLIAC

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams have released their schedules for the 2019-2020 season.

The women’s squad will play exhibitions against Wisconsin-Green Bay and Finlandia University, before opening their regular season at the Lewis Invitational November 9th. The men’s team will begin its season at the McKendree/Lewis Invitational that same day. Both teams will host Northern Michigan University on December 15th, and visit the Wildcats February 27th. See the men’s schedule here, and the women’s schedule here.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings have acquired forward Adam Erne from the Tampa Bay Lightning. Erne appeared in 65 games with Tampa Bay last season, but averaged just over 10 minutes per contest. The Lightning get Detroit’s fourth-round pick in the 2020 draft.

NFL

The Green Bay Packers continue their NFL preseason schedule tonight against the Ravens in Baltimore.

The Detroit Lions’ next exhibition game is Saturday at Houston.
