State Farm Takes Twilight League Series Opener – Wednesday Sports Wrap

MLB

The Seattle Mariners scored six runs in the sixth inning, and buried the Detroit Tigers 11-6 last night. Matthew Boyd gave up four home runs – two to Tony Murphy, and two to Kyle Seager. Seager hit his third home run of the night in the ninth inning, when Niko Goodrum initially caught his long fly ball at the wall in left-center field, but then collided with Brandon Dixon. The ball popped out of Goodrum’s glove, and over the wall. John Hicks and Jake Rogers homered for Detroit.

The Tigers host the Mariners again tonight. Edwin Jackson will start against Marco Gonzales. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit reliever Blaine Hardy will miss the rest of the season to undergo treatment on his aching pitching elbow. The Tigers hope the therapy program will help him avoid surgery that could cost him part of next season. He’s been placed on the injured list.

Marwin Gonzalez’ three-run homer off Josh Hader in the eighth inning gave the Minnesota Twins a 7-5 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers last night. Gonzalez’ blow off Hader’s first pitch came after the Crew had scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to take their first lead of the game. Yasmani Grandal homered for Milwaukee.

The Brewers will wrap up that quick interleague set against the Twins this afternoon. Gio Gonzalez will start against Kyle Gibson.

Twilight League

Dean Kangas State Farm scored three late runs, and defeated REL-Mohawk Technologies 7-4 in the opening game of the Copper Country Twilight League championship series last night. State Farm took an early lead with two in the top of the first. REL responded with a run in the bottom of the first, and two more on bases-loaded walks in the bottom of the third to take the lead. State Farm regained the advantage with single runs in the fifth and sixth. Brian Juoperi scored three times for State Farm. Luke Paul got the win on the mound.

Game two will be played tomorrow evening at the Hancock Driving Park. Our broadcast coverage will begin around 6:15 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com. Game three has tentatively been scheduled for next Tuesday, if needed.
