An effort is underway to help local students get the snack food they may be missing while not in school.

The Let’s Eat Community Meals Summer Program is offering Games and Snacks for students at the George Gipp Arena in Laurium three days a week.  Meals are served from 11 AM to 1 PM on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

The organization says the need in the CLK school district is urgent with roughly 900 students receiving free or reduced rate lunches during the school year.  Snacks have been provided since the program started on June 10th for all students in the area regardless of income.

Meal content is meant to be nutritious, high in fresh fruit, protein and easy to carry out.  Food is purchased from the Western Upper Peninsula Food Bank of the Community Action Initiative.  Some fresh fruit as well as bread and dairy products are purchased from local grocery stores to assure freshness.

Funding for the program has been provided by the local Walmart store in Houghton.

While grabbing their snack, kids can take part in various games and sports available to them on site.

The project is staffed by volunteers from Let’s Eat and other community members.  If you’re interested in volunteering please contact Bill Binroth for Let’s Eat Community Meals, Inc. at 906-481-3220.
