Houghton’s New Solid Waste Ordinance Delayed

A proposed revision of the City of Houghton’s Solid Waste ordinance did not advance at last night’s City Council meeting, because of a point raised during the public hearing.

A citizen asked if something could be done to prevent the mess caused when bagged trash is placed at the curb the evening before pickup, and animals rip the bags apart.

Councilor Rachel Lankton suggested that the ordinance include a requirement that trash placed at the curb before 5:00 am on pickup day be secured in an appropriate container. Other councilors agreed.

Adding the verbiage means the ordinance needs to be republished, and another public hearing held before it can be approved.
