Baraga County Board Fails to Fill Hospital Trustee Vacancy

NOTE – THIS STORY HAS BEEN UPDATED TO REFLECT THE BARAGA COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS’ OPPOSITION TO THE KBIC’S REQUEST TO BE GIVEN CONTROL OF WATER QUALITY ON THE L’ANSE RESERVATION.

That open seat on the Baraga County Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees will remain vacant for at least another month. The Baraga County Commission couldn’t decide between three candidates at yesterday’s meeting. Courtney Jones, who was endorsed for the position by the Hospital Board, was supported by three of the five commissioners. Four votes were needed to pass the two-thirds majority needed for approval. After several tries, commissioners decided to revisit the issue next month.

Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Tribal Council President Chris Swartz told Commissioners that the recent tire collection event had been quite successful…

Swartz said the Tribe is open to working with the county on similar events in the future…

The event was held at the waste transfer station in the KBIC Industrial Park.

Commissioners went on record opposing the KBIC’s request to assume water quality management on the reservation. If approved by the federal government, the KBIC would be the first tribe in Michigan to be granted such control. 60 tribes in other parts of the country have been given permission.

Commissioners also approved the final payment for Phase One of the Point Abbeye Park project. Money has been provided through state grant. Board members also went on record supporting continued state operation of the public mental health system, and an effort to establish a rocket launch site in the Upper Peninsula.
