Keweenaw Chain Drive Festival
Sam Kilpela from Atlantic Mine won the 28-mile XC race Saturday at the Maasto Hiihto and Churning Rapids Trails in a photo finish. Kilpela crossed the line four-tenths of a second ahead of runner-up Chad Wells of Petoskey. Ben Kalis of Big Rapids finished third, five seconds off the pace. Kate McCloud of Atlantic Mine earned an easy win in the women’s competition, finishing 26 minutes better than runner-up Kelsey Kellerman of De Pere, Wisconsin.
In the 15-mile event Saturday, Ben Olson of Perham, Minnesota took the title, four minutes faster than Louis Hindman of Marquette. Ethel Karinen of Calumet easily won the women’s division, 19 minutes ahead of Lauren Maki of Marshfield, Wisconsin.
At yesterday’s Enduro at the Tech Trails, Joshua Johnson of Marquette took the title, finishing 12 seconds better than Kilpela. Hancock’s Justin Hoffmeyer finished third. Hanna Derby of Marquette won the women’s division, with Hancock’s Kate Thayer second.

In Copper Country Fast Pitch Softball action tonight, Superior National Bank will take on Coca Cola of Hancock in a doubleheader at the Bone Yard in Lake Linden.

MLB
Spencer Turnbull struggled, as the Detroit Tigers lost to the Cleveland Indians 8-0 yesterday. Turnbull labored through five innings, giving up six runs on 10 hits. Detroit collected just four hits against Cleveland starter Trevor Bauer, who threw his first career shutout.
The Tigers have today off, and begin a quick interleague set at Pittsburgh against the Pirates tomorrow. Daniel Norris will start against Mitch Keller. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.
Jesús Aguilar and Eric Thames homered, as the Milwaukee Brewers got past the San Francisco Giants 5-3 yesterday. Starter Chase Anderson gave up all three Giants’ runs over four innings. Matt Albers was awarded the win, with an inning of scoreless relief.
The Brewers visit the San Diego Padres tonight. Jhoulys Chacín will return from the injured list to pitch against Joey Lucchesi.
American Legion Baseball
The Copper Country Flames American Legion baseball team logged a win and two close losses while going 1-3 at the Rebel Invite in Rhinelander over the weekend. The Flames dropped game one 5-4 to the Marquette Blues. Brandon Norkol had three hits. Game two was an 8-2 victory over the host Rebels. Carter Crouch threw a four-hitter, and had two hits. Justin Norkol, Cade Farrell and Will Romano also each had two hits. Game three went nine innings, with the Flames suffering a 12-11 loss to Clintonville. Justin Norkol and Brandon Norkol each had two hits. Game four was a 13-0 loss to DC Everest.
