Tigers, Brewers Earn Late Wins – Thursday Sports Wrap

Fast Pitch Softball

In Copper Country Women’s Fast Pitch Softball League play last night, Crush/Diamond House/Baby E’s swept Coca Cola of Hancock 7-6 and 21-9. Mackenzie LePage was the winning pitcher in the first game, and struck out eight. Delaney Heinonen struck out 11, but took the loss. Clara Colombe had two hits for Crush, and Emilie Scholie had two for Coca Cola. Kara Kinnunen was the winning pitcher in the nightcap. Ciera Neiswonger had a double, and Fayah Zapolik had a triple.

Slow Pitch Softball

In Copper Country Slow Pitch Softball play last evening…
– McGann’s/Northern Auto outslugged Bucko’s/Labatt’s 35-19. The result of Bucko’s LaBatt’s game against Downtowner Two was not reported.
– Lake Superior Design overcame an early seven-run deficit to defeat Harter’s Carquest 24-14. The result of
Lake Superior Design’s contest against A and S Industrial was not reported.
– Coca Cola/Monte Carlo scored four runs in the eighth inning to tie Koppers, then won the game with 10-9 with a run in the bottom of the ninth. The result of
Coca Cola/Monte Carlo’s game against Pat’s Foods/Bucko’s was not reported.

MLB

Brandon Dixon’s sacrifice fly in the eighth inning drove home JaCoby Jones with the winning run, as the Detroit Tigers edged the Kansas City Royals 3-2 last night. Daniel Norris gave up two runs over five innings. Shane Greene earned his 20th save.

The Tigers face the Royals again tonight. The game will be played in Omaha, Nebraska, in advance of the College World Series. It will be the first Major League game ever played in the state of Nebraska. Matthew Boyd will start against Homer Bailey. Pregame coverage will begin at 7:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers scored three runs in the top of the 14th inning, and defeated the Houston Astros 6-3 last night. Milwaukee batters struck out 24 times in the game – 15 times in the seven innings Justin Verlander pitched. Verlander gave up just four hits, but three were home runs, by Ryan Braun, Yasmani Grandal, and Eric Thames. Mike Moustakas’ two-run shot in the top of the 14th was the game-winner.

The Brewers have today off, and open a series in San Francisco against the Giants tomorrow night. Zach Davies will pitch against Drew Pomeranz.

NHL

The Saint Louis Blues are celebrating their first NHL title. The Blues defeated the Boston Bruins 4-1 in the seventh game of the championship series to take possession of the Stanley Cup. Ryan O’Reilly won the Conn Smythe trophy as the post-season Most Valuable Player. The Blues will visit the Copper Country to face the Detroit Red Wings in the Kraft Hockeyville game September 26th at the Colosseum.

NBA

The NBA Championship Series continues tonight, as the Toronto Raptors visit the Golden State Warriors. Toronto leads the series three games to two.

Chain Drive Festival

The Keweenaw Chain Drive Festival returns to Bridgefest weekend this year. There are 15 and 28-mile XC races at the Maasto Hiihto and Churning Rapids trails on Saturday. On Sunday, there’s an Enduro event for adults, and Enduro and XC events for kids, at the Tech Trails. For full details and registration information, click here.

Running

The annual Denise Marth Memorial Fun Run, Walk and Roll take place on Saturday. Registration will open at 8:15 at L’Anse Waterfront Park. Transportation will be provided to the starting point at the Whirl-I-Gig in Zeba. The course will cover a 5k distance back to Waterfront Park. Besides walking and running, any human-powered method of transportation is acceptable – bicycles, skateboards, etc. Proceeds will benefit the Baraga County Community Foundation.
