Pine Mountain Music Festival is all about “Classic Roots Fresh Growth”

Anticipation is growing for this year’s Pine Mountain Music Festival (PMMF), which kicks off June 17 in Iron Mountain when Moira Smiley and Jefferson Hamer present a one of a kind concert. Moira Smiley creates and performs new work for voices while Jefferson Hamer, a gifted guitarist and singer weaves gorgeous instrumental lines with close harmonies. Moira and Jefferson will be in Marquette, June 18 and the Calumet Theatre, June 19. Jefferson will do a special solo concert at the Crystal Theatre, Crystal Falls, June 20.

Bergonzi Trio

It’s tradition that the Bergonzi Chamber group dazzles audiences in the U.P.  This summer they return as a trio with a new member,  pianist, Lindsay Garritson. They will perform Beethoven’s Archduke Trio on June 19 in Marquette, Iron Mountain, June 21 and at the Rozsa in Houghton, June 22. Don’t miss this long standing tradition. They will also present free children’s concerts throughout the U.P.  (Check the web site pmmf.org for times and locations.)

This next troupe, “Trust me, will rock your world”, explained the Head of Music, Stony Brook, NYU, enthusiastically. They are Miles Masicotte, Hristina Blagoeva, and Giovanni Perez. Miles, originally a jazz pianist turned classical pianist wih his wife, Hristina, a Bulgarian flute player are paired with Giovanni Perez, a show-stopping flutist. “It will be something really exciting, original and classic.” PMMF Director Douglas Day anticipates. They will be at the Calumet Theatre, June 26.

The Festival’s “Pride and Joy” each year is to spotlight outstanding young musicians from the U.P. This year the UPstarts are being mentored by professionals Susan Byykkonen, accompanist, Miles, Giovanni and Hristina. Miles has composed an original piece that the UPstarts will perform as a group. A great opportunity for our young musicians and a special treat for the audience. They will perform June 28 at the Presque Isle Band Shell, Marquette, (a FREE outdoor concert closing out the “Marquette Art Week”), June 29 in Kingsford’s First Presbyterian Church, and June 30 at the Rozsa in Houghton.

This years UPstarts are, Eric Banitt;Marquette, Benjamin Merte; Marquette, Kalee Herendez; Iron River, Karen Albert; Mc Millian, Benjamin Zindler; Bark River,and Elizabeth Grugin; Marquette.
