UP State Senator Introduces “Heartbeat Bill”

Abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected would be illegal under a bill introduced this week by State Senator Ed McBroom

The Upper Peninsula Republican is seeking to include Michigan among several states that have recently passed restrictions on abortions.

McBroom introduced a bill in the Michigan Senate Wednesday that would make it a felony for a physician to administer an abortion after a fetal heartbeat is detected, usually around six to eight weeks.  “The intent of the bill is to continue to drive the conversation about the preciousness of all human life and to point out that unborn babies are human life,” McBroom said.

The success of laws restricting abortions being passed in other states was a sign to McBroom that perhaps Michigan was ready.  “This was an idea I had a long time ago but suddenly seeing other people around the country moving forward with it was encouraging,” he said.  “As much as I recognize that those in opposition are loud and vocal, I believe that there are more and more people who’ve recognized that an unborn life has rights as well.”

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has vowed to veto any bill that seeks to put restrictions on abortions.  McBroom hopes that there will be meaningful discussing before that happens.

“I like to always believe that good policy will win out the day. I recognize that’s not always the case but it’s important to have this discussion and recognize that there’s people that disagree with me and we should be able to come and reason together,” said McBroom.

An anti-abortion group, Right To Life, is seeking to put the initiative before voters thus circumventing any veto by Whitmer.

A similar bill was introduced into the Michigan House this week.
