Miguel Cabrera’s grand slam powered the Detroit Tigers to a 9-6 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays last night. Ryan Carpenter allowed two runs over seven innings, and earned the win. Buck Farmer gave up a grand slam in the eighth.
The Tigers will host the Rays again tonight. Spencer Turnbull will start against Charlie Morton. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Tigers second baseman Josh Harrison will need surgery to repair his torn hamstring. He could be sidelined for another eight weeks.
The Miami Marlins scored 11 runs off Taylor Williams and Corbin Burnes in the fifth inning, and clobbered the Milwaukee Brewers 16-0 last night. By that time, the Crew was already in a hole, after Chase Anderson gave up four runs over the first four frames. Milwaukee collected only six hits.
The Brewers entertain the Marlins again this evening. After spending more than 20 months rehabbing a shoulder injury, Jimmy Nelson will open for Milwaukee tonight. Sandy Alcantara will counter for Miami.
On day two of the Major League Baseball Draft yesterday…
– The Detroit Tigers selected all college players, including Tennessee third baseman Andre Lupicius, UCLA shortstop Ryan Kreidler, East Carolina outfielder Bryant Packard, Mississippi catcher Cooper Johnson, LSU pitcher Zach Hess, Arkansas shortstop Jack Kenley, North Carolina pitcher Austin Bergner, and Creighton first baseman Jake Holton.
– The Milwaukee Brewers also stayed mostly in the college ranks, taking Washington catcher Nick Kahle, Mississippi catcher Thomas Dillard, Louisville pitcher Nick Bennett, Texas Tech outfielder Gabe Holt, Texas shortstop David Hamilton, and Texas Tech pitcher Floyd Taylor… along with high school catcher Darrien Miller.
The Draft will conclude today, with rounds 11 through 40.

NHL
The Stanley Cup championship series continues tomorrow night, when the Boston Bruins visit the Saint Louis Blues. The set is tied at two wins per team.
NBA
The NBA Championship Series continues this evening, as the Toronto Raptors visit the Golden State Warriors. That set is tied at one win per team.
MTU
Michigan Tech student athletes are lending their support to the new Bridgefest Touch a Truck event a week from Saturday. Members of Huskies sports teams along with mascot Blizzard T. Husky will be part of the fun at Keweenaw Chevrolet. Fans will have a chance to see all sorts of big vehicles up close, including the Zamboni from the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. There will also be a bounce house and a petting zoo along with carnival food.
Fishing
One of the Upper Peninsula’s biggest fishing tournaments will be held on Saturday. The Keweenaw Bay Classic is part of the Baraga County Lake Trout Festival. Fishing for lake trout and salmon will take place on Keweenaw and Huron Bays. Download the registration form at LakeTroutFestival.com, and turn it in today, tomorrow or Friday morning at the Baraga County Convention and Visitors Bureau in L’Anse. Registrations will also be accepted Friday afternoon until 5:00 at Meadowbrook Arena. The required team captains meeting will begin at 6:00 at Meadowbrook.
Our high school softball tournament coverage continues Saturday from the Division Four regionals at Norway. L’Anse will face Bark River-Harris at 11:00 Eastern Time. Hancock will play Rudyard at 1:00. We’ll broadcast both games, and the regional title match if either local team advances, on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
