The following press release was issued by the Keweenaw Community Foundation:
Hancock, Michigan— The Keweenaw Community Foundation celebrated its 25th Anniversary on the 13th of April 2019 at the Miscowaubik Club in Calumet. Established in 1994 the Keweenaw Community Foundation has served Houghton and Keweenaw counties for the past 25 years, helping donors and members of the public help their community.
Multiple awards were presented at this year’s event. Robert Maatta received the Herman “Winks” Gundlach Award for the greatest contribution to a KCF Fund this past financial year. The Volunteer of the Year Award—normally presented to an individual who has made numerous volunteer efforts to make our community a better place—was presented to all the Father’s Day Flood Volunteers. Our community rallied around this disaster and so many came together to support one another that one individual couldn’t be singled out. The Community Impact Award went to the Portage Health Foundation who also greatly helped the community in the immediate aftermath of the Father’s Day Floods.
The Martha and Floyd Heart & Hands Society is awarded to someone who has given of him or herself in the service of peace, justice, or the environment in our local community. Carol Ekstrom was the recipient of this year’s award. As a passionate and active environmentalist and organizer, Carol will be putting her award money to the Copper Country Recycling Initiative and Copper Country GAP.
It was a special evening with many community members from across the Keweenaw coming together to celebrate, enjoy good food and company, and help raise funds for our community foundation. Silver level sponsors (gifts of $2500) were Aspirus Keweenaw. Bronze level sponsors (gifts of $1000) were Mount Bohemia, Steve Zutter (Edward Jones), Ted Simonsen (Ameriprise Financial), Upper Peninsula Power Company, Gundlach Champion, and Campioni’s Pat’s Foods. Copper level sponsors (gifts of $500) were Keweenaw Brewing Company, Rukkila Negro & Associates, Range Bank, Matt Eliason (Eliason Law), Paul & Margaret Boissevain, and Terry Kinzel & Sue Ellen Kingsley.
