– The Lake Linden-Hubbell girls easily won the team title. Ontonagon was second, followed by Chassell and Ewen-Trout Creek. Baraga was sixth, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City eighth, and Jeffers 10th. Lake Linden’s Abby Beaudoin won the 100 and 300–meter hurdles. Joslyn Perala took the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. Mariah Willmer claimed the 400-meter and 800-meter runs, and the long jump. Jamie Hendrickson took the high jump. MacKenzie Lepage won the pole vault. Chassell’s Gwen Kangas won the 3200-meter run. Baraga’s Jaylyn Lindemann claimed the shot put. Holly Jo Wardynski from Ontonagon won the discus throw.
– Bessemer won the boys team title, with Lake Linden-Hubbell as runner-up. Dollar Bay-Tamarack City finished a distant third, followed by Ontonagon, Ewen-Trout Creek and Chassell. Baraga was eighth, and Jeffers 10th. For the Lakes, Caleb Klein edged Carter Crouch by three-hundredths of a second to win the 100-meter dash. He also took the 200-meter dash. Cole Gregoire won the high jump. Chassell’s Sam Wilson won the discus throw.
The Lakes dominated the girls All-Conference awards that were handed out yesterday. Mariah Willmer was named Most Valuable Player. Abby Beaudoin was honored as top sprinter, and Jamie Hendrickson as best jumper. The Lakes were named girls Team of the Year, and coach Gary Guisfredi was named Coach of the Year. Baraga’s Lindemann was named top thrower.
Bessemer was named boys Team of the Year. Lake Linden’s Caleb Klein was named top sprinter, and Chassell’s Sam Wilson was top thrower.
The WestPAC track meet will be held today at Houghton.

Chad Wallach’s double off Joe Jiménez in the top of the 11th inning lifted the Miami Marlins to a 5-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers last night. Detroit had tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the ninth. JaCoby Jones homered earlier in the contest. Detroit batters struck out 17 times.
The Tigers have lost seven straight, and host the Marlins again tonight. Daniel Norris will start against Jose Urena. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Milwaukee Brewers outhit the Cincinnati Reds 6-4 last night, but lost the game 3-0. Three of Cincy’s hits – and all three of their runs – came off Gio Gonzalez in the first inning. Gonzalez completed five frames, and took the loss.
The Brewers entertain the Reds again this afternoon. Zach Davies will pitch against Luis Castillo.
NHL
The Stanley Cup championship series is set. The Saint Louis Blues claimed a 5-1 victory over the San Jose Sharks last night, to win the Western Conference title 4-2. The Blues will face the Boston Bruins for the Cup beginning Monday.
NBA
In NBA playoff action, the Toronto Raptors defeated the Milwaukee Bucks 120-102 last night. The Eastern Conference final is tied 2-2.
MTU
Former Houghton High School standout Raymond Brice has been named captain of the Michigan Tech hockey team for the 2019-2020 season. Brice will be a senior. He’s a two-time WCHA All-Academic Team member. Last season he received the Rick Yeo Unsung Hero Award from his teammates. Alex Smith and Seamus Donohue will serve as alternate captains.
