Calendar Filling Up At Calumet Public Library

The Calumet Public Library is rolling out their schedule of events for the coming months, featuring several great programs and events, as well as ways people can get involved.

Author Karen Dionne will be visiting May 29^th and multiple copies of her book, The Marsh King’s Daughter, are available to check out.

L’Anse native Jake Putala returns for another presentation in the Michigan Attorney General Consumer Education series.  Putala will discuss Identity Theft on May 22^nd.

The Calumet Public Library will be accepting gently used books and DVDs for the Annual Used Book Sale. Items can be dropped off can beginning Tuesday, May 14th.  Cloth and other reusable bags are also needed.

Horticulture Series: “Four Years of Gardening – Challenges and Lessons Learned,” by Master Gardener Volunteer Trainee, Amalia Anderson6:30 pm

On June 19^th at the Calumet Public Library, Master Gardener Volunteer Trainee Amalia Anderson will talk about the challenges and joys of gardening in Calumet.  In her words, “I’ve been gardening in the Calumet area for four years.  During this time, I’ve made lots of mistakes and have learned a lot.  The challenges have run the gamut, from old plants to new pests.  In this lecture I’ll share what I’ve learned and where I go to find scientifically based answers when I run into a new problem that needs solving.”

Join other gardeners, new and experienced, to discuss the challenges and lessons learned in gardening locally; find solutions to nagging problems and pose questions stemming from your own experiences.  This is the first in a three-part Horticulture Series to be held on the third Wednesday of June, July, and August at the Calumet Public Library.

Used Book Sale to Benefit the Calumet Public Library

Proceeds go to support efforts of the Friends of the Calumet Public Library

Sponsored by the Friends of the Calumet Public Library, the used book sale is the organization’s annual fund raiser.  Featuring a wide variety of books, CDs, and DVDs, the collection will be on sale from Friday June 21^st (members only) from 4:00 – 6:00 pm (memberships will be sold at the door) and on Saturday June 22^nd from 10:00 – 3:00 at the CLK Multi-purpose room located down the hall from the library.  (When entering the building from the library parking lot, turn left and the multi-purpose room will be a few feet down the hall on your left.)  Saturday afternoon from 3:00 – 4:00 there will be a bag or box sale of remaining books.

Proceeds from this fundraiser go to sponsor library services and programs not provided for by the general library budget.  In 2018-2019, funds have been used to purchase Mango Languages (a world language teaching program available to all library patrons), large print books, multiple titles for our Red Jacket Readers book club, and many new books including additions to the children’s, YA, and adult collections.  Funding also helps support evening programs at the library throughout the year.

“Jacob A. Riis, Gilded Age Advocate for Social Justice,”presentation and book signing by author Bonnie Yochelson6:30 pm

When Jacob A. Riis arrived in New York in 1870, he was a penniless Danish immigrant. When he died in 1914, he was a national spokesman advocating tolerance for arriving immigrants and promoting programs to address the growing urban crisis in housing, education and public health. His story offers parallels and lessons for today. Join Bonnie Yochelson, author of Rediscovering Jacob Riis, as she discusses Riis’ work as a photojournalist.

Bonnie Yochelson is an art historian specializing in photography and an independent curator.  In addition to Jacob Riis, she has authored books and organized exhibitions on photographers including Berenice Abbott, Alfred Stieglitz, and Karl Struss. She is now writing a book on Alice Austen. 

Copies of Yochelson’s book, Rediscovering Jacob Riis: Exposure Journalism and Photography in Turn-of-the-Century New York, will beavailable for sale and the proceeds will go to support efforts of the Friends of the Calumet Public Library.   This book will be discussed at the library’s public book club in September.   

This program is part of a series of local events planned in conjunction with the Jacob A. Riis: How the Other Half Lives traveling exhibit on display in Calumet from September 2 – October 20, 2019 at the KNHP Visitor Center.  The Quincy Mine Hoist Association will host the Riis exhibit in partnership with the Keweenaw National Historical Park Advisory Commission and National Park Service. This exhibition is made possible by NEH on the Road, a special initiative of the National Endowment for the Humanities. This exhibition is adapted from the exhibition Jacob A. Riis:  Revealing New York’s Other Half, organized by the Museum of the City of New York. The exhibition was curated by Bonnie Yochelson and co-presented by the Library of Congress. It was made possible with major grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Terra Foundation for the American Arts, as well as support from D. Euan and Merete Baird, The Malkin Fund, Ronay and Richard L. Menschel, Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik’s Foundation, C. Fleming and Judy Heilmann, Kan and Lotte Leschly, The Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation, and the John L. Loeb Jr. Foundation. It was adapted and toured for NEH on the Road by Mid-America Arts Alliance.
