Keweenaw Roller Derby Opens Home Season At Dee Stadium

Saturday is Derby at the Dee as the Keweenaw Roller Derby hosts Team Unicorn from Madison, Wisconsin to open their home season.

Keweenaw Roller Derby is part of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association and tomorrow’s bout is the first of four derby events at the Dee this year.

I Love Skatin’ Terri Frew says the WFTDA league has a minimum skills test that promotes safety. “You have to demonstrate that you can do these skills safely in order to skate in a bout,” she said. “Not just that, we emphasis a culture of safety on the team and just a general respect for our teammates and our opponents.  I think that’s important.”

Tickets are just $5 and kids 10 and under are free.  Suomi Restaurant will be offering food and there will be drinks and merchandise available for sale.  Plus there will be a halftime performance by 47 North Bellydance.

Frew says although they take the sport seriously, it’s more important to be respectful, be safe, and have fun. “Having a good game, I think, is—to me, anyway, and I try to communicate this to my team as the captain—having a good, safe, well-thought, sportsmanlike game is better to me than winning,” said Frew.

Doors open at 5pm and the action begins at 6.  Get there early and grab a seat trackside.
