L’Anse Twp Voters Block Wind Turbine Referendum, Hancock School Millage Passes

Most of the ballot proposals in the Copper Country were approved by voters in Tuesday’s election, but the most controversial of them was not.

A referendum to change the wording of an ordinance in L’Anse Township was defeated 257-315. The change would have opened the door for wind turbines to be built, even though the company proposing to do so had previously pulled out.

Also in Baraga County, both the Arvon Township Fire Department and the Arvon Township Hall millage passed, 96-67 and 106-56, respectively.

In Houghton County, the operating millage for Hancock Schools passed 271-127.  The Adams Township Cemetery Millage passed 143-20, while four items in Elm River Township were approved—the General Fund, General Services, Fire Fund, and Road Fund—with vote counts of 45-4, 46-3, 46-3, and 47-2

There were no items on the ballot in either Keweenaw or Ontonagon County.
