– Jeffers dropped both games of its doubleheader against the Gogebic Miners, 7-6 in extra innings, and 5-1. Elias Rajala had two doubles and a single in the opening game. Austin Kinnunen stole home, as the Jets swiped eight bases. Eli Larson had a double and a single in the nightcap.
In softball yesterday…
– Calumet lost both sides of its doubleheader at Negaunee, 6-1 and 11-1.

In golf at the Kiwanis Invitational at Wawanowin yesterday…
– The Houghton boys finished third, and the Calumet boys were fourth. Jiseung Choi of the Gremlins and Landon Johnson of the Copper Kings tied for second individually.
– The Houghton girls team placed second. Peyton Dube of the Gremlins medaled, finishing 23 strokes better than her nearest competitor.
Finlandia
Five Finlandia University softball players have been named to the American Collegiate Athletic Association All-Star roster. Denia Bent and Makenna Gorham were named to the first team. Bent was actually honored twice – both as a pitcher and a shortstop. Kassandra Avila, Rheanna Bain and Harlie Caster were placed on the second team.
The Finlandia men’s soccer team has landed another new recruit. Waylon Armstrong is from Kimberly, Alabama.
MLB
The Detroit Tigers fell to the Los Angeles Angels 5-2 last night. Daniel Norris gave up three runs over five innings, and took the loss.
The Tigers host the Angels again tonight. Matthew Boyd will start against Tyler Skaggs. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire had to leave the dugout early in the game because of an allergic reaction. Team doctors said it was probably a response to something he ate, and he’s expected to be ready for tonight’s contest.
The Milwaukee Brewers blasted open a scoreless game with six runs in the seventh inning, and blanked the Washington Nationals 6-0 last night. Lorenzo Cain opened the floodgates with a bases-loaded double that drove in two runs. In an effort to avoid the first-inning struggles experienced recently by Freddy Peralta, Adrian Houser started the game. Peralta took over in the third inning, pitched through the seventh, and gave up just three hits.
The Brewers host the Nationals again this afternoon. Brandon Woodruff will pitch against Jeremy Hellickson.
Former Tigers and Brewers pitcher Mike Fiers threw a no-hitter last night, as the Oakland Athletics blanked the Cincinnati Reds 2-0. It’s the second no-hitter of Fiers’ career.
NHL
In the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs last night, the Saint Louis Blues advanced with a 2-1 double-overtime victory over the Dallas Stars. The Blues won that series 4-3.
Tonight, The Colorado Avalanche visit the San Jose Sharks. That series is tied 3-3.
The Edmonton Oilers made it official yesterday, introducing former Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland as their new GM. Detroit had promoted Holland to team vice-president and given him a contract extension when they hired Steve Yzerman just a couple of weeks ago. He will have full authority to rebuild the Oilers, whose roster includes one of the best young players in hockey, Connor McDavid.
NBA
In NBA playoff action last evening…
– The Toronto Raptors trounced the Philadelphia 76ers 125-89. Toronto leads that series 3-2.
– The Denver Nuggets buried the Portland Trail Blazers 124-98. Denver leads that set 3-2.
Tonight…
– The Milwaukee Bucks host the Boston Celtics. Milwaukee leads that series 3-1.
– The Houston Rockets visit the Golden State Warriors. That set is tied 2-2.
