FinnU Softball Splits on Tourney Day One – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school baseball yesterday…
– Calumet dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Gladstone, 1-0 and 6-0. Trevor Hendrickson took the tough loss in the first game, giving up only three hits.

Finlandia

The Finlandia University softball team split it game on the opening day of the American Collegiate Athletic Association tournament in Alfred, New York, yesterday afternoon. The second-seeded Lions won their opening game 7-4 over third-seed Alfred State. Each team scored three runs in the first inning. Finlandia broke the game open with three in the sixth. Denia Bent was the winning pitcher. In their second game, FinnU collected just three hits in a 9-0 loss to top-seed Thomas More.

Alfred State won its second contest in the double-elimination tournament yesterday, so Finlandia will face the Pioneers again this morning at 10:00. The winner will take on Thomas More at noon. Because of the double-elimination format, if Thomas More wins the noon game, they take the title, and the tournament ends. If Thomas More loses the noon contest, a second game would be held to determine the champion. We’ll broadcast all of the Lions tournament games on 99.3 The Lift.

The Lions baseball ended its season with a pair of losses at Wisconsin-LaCrosse yesterday, 6-3 and 20-2. Joey Krug homered in the final game, establishing a new single-season record with five, and a new career record with 12. Finlandia ends its season with a record of 4-31.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers lost an ugly 15-3 rout to the Kansas City Royals yesterday. Starter Tyson Ross barely made it into the second inning, and was charged with five runs. Drew VerHagen was torched for six runs in the eighth inning. Ronny Rodriguez and Jeimer Candelario homered.

The Tigers conclude that home set against the Kansas City Royals this afternoon. Spencer Turnbull will start against Brad Keller. Because of Finlandia softball on 99.3 The Lift, Tigers pregame coverage will begin at 12:45 on KBear 102.3.

After the game, VerHagen was designated for assignment. He can be claimed by any team off waivers. If he clears waivers, he could accept an assignment to Toledo, or become a free agent.

The Milwaukee Brewers scored twice in the bottom of the 18th inning yesterday, and eked out a 4-3 victory over the New York Mets. Milwaukee took a 2-1 lead into the ninth, but New York’s Pete Alonso homered off Junior Guerra to tie the contest. The Mets finally scratched out a run against Taylor Williams in the top of the 18th, but the Crew loaded the bases in the bottom of the 18th, and Ryan Braun’s two-run single ended the game. It was his sixth hit of the contest.

The Brewers wrap up that home series against the Mets this afternoon. Zach Davies will pitch against Jason Vargas.
