MTU Hockey Sweeps FSU – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School Football – Calumet Reaches Playoffs
On the final night of the high school football season…
– Calumet claimed a playoff berth with a 47-38 victory at Gladstone. The win guarantees the Kings a spot in the playoffs. We’ll cover all the Copper Kings’ playoff games on KBear 102.3, or one of our sister stations.
– Thomas Schmidt ran for five touchdowns as the Houghton Gremlins rolled to a 62-23 victory in the 62nd Copper Bowl Friday night.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell lost at Forest Park 36-22. We’ll cover all the Lakes’ playoff games on KBear 102.3, or one of our sister stations.
– L’Anse fell to Munising 42-6. The Purple Hornets will not reach the playoffs.
– Baraga won its first-ever eight-man football game, 20-14 over Ontonagon.
– Ewen-Trout Creek fell to Superior Central 22-0.

MTU Hockey Sweeps Ferris
The Michigan Tech hockey team completed a sweep of eighth-ranked Ferris State with a 2-1 victory Saturday night. Alex Gillies and David Johnstone each scored power play goals. The huskies opened the set with a 1-0 Friday night. Blake Pietila scored the game’s only goal. Jamie Phillips stopped 34 shots in Saturday’s game, and 33 shots on Friday. The Huskies host the University of Michigan next weekend.

The Tech football team suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday, falling to Ferris State 37-3. The Bulldogs’ defense held Huskies’ running back Charlie Leffingwell to just 41 yards, while their offense rolled up 322 yards on the ground. The Huskies play at Tiffin next Saturday.

The Tech soccer team fell to Ferris State 2-0 Friday night. It was the first conference loss of the season for the Huskies, who entertain Grand Valley today at noon.

The Tech volleyball team lost at Ferris State 3-0 Friday night., and fell 3-0 at Grand Valley State Saturday.

Both Tech cross country teams ran at the U.P. Championships at Northern Michigan University Friday. Sean Pengelly won his second consecutive race by covering the eight kilometers in 25:27. Jani Lane was the second Husky across and fourth overall. The women’s squad was led by Deedra Irwin’s fourth-place effort.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team swept Lake Superior State, with a 3-0 win on Saturday, and a 4-2 victory Friday night.

The NMU football team lost at Ashland 44-14 Saturday afternoon.

At Northland International University, the Finlandia volleyball team lost to Indiana University Northwest 3-2 (25-12,25-12,22-25,23-25,11-15) on Friday, and 3-0 (17-25,20-25,17-25) on Saturday. The Lions fell to the host Pioneers 3-2 on Friday. The result of Saturday’s game against NIU was not reported.

The Finlandia men’s soccer team lost to Wisconsin-Oshkosh 4-0 Saturday. Both Lions’ teams will entertain Lakeland College today. The women’s game begins at 11:00, and the men’s kickoff is at 1:00 at McAfee Field.

The Calumet Wolverines lost to Waupun 7-5 in the consolation game at the Keevin Cup tournament in Fond du Lac Saturday night. Mike Babcock scored a hat trick for Calumet. The Wolverines fell 6-5 to the Fond du Lac Bears in the opening round on Friday.

The Philadelphia Flyers scored three goals in the third period, and beat the Detroit Red Wings 4-2 Saturday night. Riley Sheahan and Pavel Datsyuk scored for Detroit. Jonas Gustavsson took the loss in goal. The Wings skate at Washington Wednesday night. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

The Lions face the Falcons this morning in London. Kickoff is at 9:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

The Packers play at New Orleans in the Sunday night game.
