Ballot Items For Tuesday, May 7th Election

There are a few items on the ballot coming up on Tuesday, May 7^th.

In Houghton County, Hancock Schools is seeking renewal of their operating millage at 18 mills for 10 years. If approved, the proposal would bring in about $1.2 million in 2020.

There is a Cemetery Millage renewal on the ballot for voters in Adams Township which would continue a 0.3 mill tax for 8 years for the maintenance and lawn care of the Atlantic Mine and South Range cemeteries. The millage raises roughly $11,700 annually.

Elm River Township voters will decide a renewal of the General Fund millage at 1.9589 mills for six years. Renewals for the General Services Fund, Fire Fund, and Road Fund are also on the ballot in Elm River Township.

In Baraga County, there is a Fire Department Millage being decided for Arvon Township.  The 1.5 mills would generate $65,800 in the first year and would remain in effect for 4 years. An Arvon Township Hall millage is also being voted on to impose 0.5 mills for two years.

The most controversial of all the ballot items will be voted on by residents of L’Anse Township when they decide the fate of the Zoning Ordinance Referendum. The wording change of the ordinance would allow for wind energy conversion systems to be constructed.
