Historical Park Looks To Renovate Old Warehouse

It’s going to be a busy summer for the Keweenaw National Historical Park. Park Superintendent Wendy Davis outlined the packed schedule to the park’s Advisory Commission Tuesday.

For years, Davis said there has been discussion surrounding the warehouse on Red Jacket Road across from the Calumet Township offices. Davis said the park recently received word that funding for the planning process to renovate the building into a multi-park curatorial facility was approved.

The roughly $10 million project would be federally funded and the building would house historical records and other items from the Keweenaw National Historical Park, the Isle Royal National Park, and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The project is still in the very early planning stages and no timetable for completion has been announced.

Davis also shared that Calumet will be the location for an upcoming Naturalization ceremony. Over 30 Upper Peninsula residents will gather this spring to officially become US citizens. The ceremony will be held on the third floor of the Visitor Center on May 23rd.

The park will be very active in the coming months with 73 interpretive projects scheduled this summer.
