Tigers, Brewers Fall – Monday Sports Wrap

High School

Finlandia

The Finlandia University baseball team lost to Wisconsin-Platteville 16-3 yesterday afternoon. Joey Krug hit his 11th career home run, tying the school record.

The Finlandia soccer team has added a new recruit. Sam Hill is a goalkeeper from Gladstone.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers lost 4-1 to the Chicago White Sox yesterday. Chicago starter Reynaldo López and three relievers combined to strike out 20 Detroit batters. Matthew Boyd gave up two runs on five hits over nine innings, and took the tough loss. He struck out nine.

The Tigers have today off, and open an interleague series against the Phillies in Philadelphia tomorrow night. Tyson Ross will start against Vince Velasquez. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

Shortstop Jordy Mercer is expected to rejoin the Tigers for tomorrow’s game. He’s been out with a quad strain. Dustin Peterson has been sent down to Toledo to make room on the roster. Second baseman Josh Harrison missed yesterday’s game with a bruised shoulder, but the injury is not believed to be serious.

The Milwaukee Brewers fell to the New York Mets 5-2 yesterday. Gio Gonzalez gave up two runs over five innings in his first start of the season. The Mets broke the game open with a run off Jacob Barnes in the seventh inning, and two runs off Aaron Wilkerson in the eighth. Mike Moustakas hit a two-run homer for Milwaukee.

The Brewers host the Colorado Rockies tonight. Zach Davies will pitch against Kyle Freeland.

Christian Yelich left yesterday’s game after his lower back stiffened up. He’s considered day-to-day.

NHL

In the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs yesterday…
– The Carolina Hurricanes got past the New York Islanders 2-1. Carolina leads that series 2-0.
– The Colorado Avalanche edged the San Jose Sharks 4-3. That set is tied at a win per team.

Tonight, the Saint Louis Blues visit the Dallas Stars. That set is tied 1-1.

NBA

In NBA playoff action yesterday…
– The Boston Celtics defeated the Milwaukee Bucks 112-90. Boston leads their second-round series 1-0.
– The Golden State Warriors edged the Houston Rockets 104-100. Golden State takes a 1-0 lead in that set.

Tonight…
– The Philadelphia 76ers visit the Toronto Raptors. Toronto leads that set 1-0.
– The Portland Trail Blazers visit the Denver Nuggets in the opening game of that series.
