Homeowners in the city of Houghton can now opt to buy flood insurance but they will not be required to under FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program.
The city council previously chose to take part in the program after flood waters devastated the area last summer.
Under the program, a lender could require a homeowner with a federally-backed mortgage get flood insurance if the residence was located in a mapped flood plain.
Houghton City Manager Eric Waara informed the council at their regular meeting Wednesday that they have received notification from FEMA that the city is now eligible for the National Flood Insurance Program and that there are no special flood hazard areas located within the city.
Waara says that means residents may purchase flood insurance if they want it
but they will not be obligated to.
Several communities in the Copper Country have likewise opted to take part in the program.
To see if flood insurance is going to be available in your community, contact your local city, village, or township office.
