LAURIUM, Mich. – Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital & Clinics is launching a new, 10-week Junior Volunteer Program to offer high school students opportunities to build their professional skills and explore career interests in health care.
The Junior Volunteer Program is open to students 14 to 18 years old and begins Monday, June 17. Participants are required to volunteer for a minimum of one, three- to four-hour shift per week, for the full 10 weeks. Shifts are available any time of day – morning, afternoon and evening.
The Junior Volunteer Program offers a variety of experiences such as:
- Staffing the hospital gift shop.
- Delivering information between departments.
- Engaging with patients.
- Helping out at Aspirus Outpatient Therapies and Fitness.
- Working on special projects
- Shadowing staff.
“We feel this is a great way for students to gain confidence and satisfaction knowing they are helping others in their community and making a positive difference,” said Jenn Jenich-Laplander, volunteer and community relations coordinator at Aspirus. “It also allows them to interact with professionals, explore a variety of health care careers, and develop their people skills, which is a valuable asset for any future situation.”
Letters announcing the Junior Volunteer Program, along with questionnaires and application forms, have been sent to all schools within the Copper Country Intermediate School District. All students ages 14 to 18 years of age are welcome to apply. Applications are available on the Aspirus website at aspirus.org.
